5 tips on becoming more climate conscious than a World Leader

Since President Donald Trump’s re-election into the Whitehouse office in January, many around the world await the next absurd executive order that will be signed. The latest order has the US government efforts to end the use of plastic straws, withdrawn.

According to the UN, climate change is more prevalent than ever. With humanity’s burning of fossil fuels emitting enough greenhouse gases to alter temperatures to between 1.1 and 1.2 degrees. This January was officially the warmest on record, 1.75C above pre-industrial level. The imminence of the climate emergency today, means that the actions of World Leaders has consequences for us all.

However, there are actions that we individually can take to reduce the effects of climate change. This guide aims to help to inform and aid those interested in becoming more environmentally conscious.

1) Try to avoid the use of single-use plastic.

This is a pretty obvious step, however immensely important. UN statistics have shown that 460 million metric tonnes of plastic produced yearly, contributes to the waste and microplastics in our environment which will remain for decades to come.

Instead of using plastic water bottles or take-away cups, take your own. Try to pack your own lunch for work or university, instead of buying meals pre-packaged in plastic.

2) Cut down on food waste.

As university students, it is easy to waste the food that you don’t get around to eating. However, by meal-prepping a couple days of food and only buying what is on your list, less food will be wasted!

3) No more late-night online fast-fashion.

Sure, it’s nice to spend time scrolling through Shein or H&M before bed. However, the Fast fashion industry contributes to 10% of total global emissions! This reflects the same amount emitted by the European Union, according to Business Insider.

Instead of buying hauls of cheap, poor quality items, try switching to better quality, sustainable clothing brands (BAZAR has curated a list of their 30 favourites). This may be more costly, but it will help reduce overconsumption amongst individuals. Additionally, shopping and selling on websites such as Vinted and Depop will help to reduce landfill.

4) One Stanley cup is enough

“Built for life” is Stanley’s slogan. However, this hasn’t stopped people from purchasing multiple, just in different colours. The same goes for many other items which are trendy on social media. There is a pressure today to own every trendy make-up product released but this adds to the 990 million metric tons of CO2 produced annually by the cosmetic industry.

So, maybe wait until you finish existing items before buying another.

5)  Don’t waste water.

Luckily, in Scotland, we have very clean water. But, only 1% of the Earth’s freshwater is safe for drinking. Climate change has meant there is increased pressure on natural water resources. Quick and easy ways to reduce water loss is to take shorter showers, fill the kettle less, and turn off the tap whilst washing dishes or brushing teeth.
