World #2 and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz has announced he will miss both the Rome Masters and Roland Garros after sustaining a wrist injury in Barcelona.
Alcaraz had already withdrawn from the Madrid masters as a precaution, but will now miss the remainder of the clay court season.
The injury occurred during a 6-4, 6-2 win in the Barcelona round of 32 as he intended to return to action so quickly after losing the Monte Carlo Masters final to Jannik Sinner. Despite winning the match, Alcaraz’s wrist injury raised some eyebrows, he’d then withdraw before his round of 16 meeting with Tomas Mahac as Arthur Fils went on to win the Barcelona title.
Going into the Madrid Masters, Jannik Sinner had the opportunity to become the first man to ever win five consecutive Masters 1000 tournaments, he now becomes the clear favourite to do so, and the win a sixth in Rome before finally completing the career grand slam in Paris this summer.
Alcaraz’s withdrawal also means he will fail to defend 3000 ranking points, which puts a serious dent into the lead he holds over world #3 Alexander Zverev.
The Spaniard will be a big miss at this year’s Roland Garros, having won the titles in both 2024 and 2025, both in five-set affairs, but his 2025 win is the most famous after an astonishing comeback against Jannik Sinner in one of the greatest tennis matches ever.
Despite wrist injuries being one of the most serious in tennis, Alcaraz has announced he intends to return to action swiftly to defend his Queens title, before competing in Wimbledon this summer.
