Edinburgh Napier Knights vs Stirling Clansmen: Preview

Week 1 of the BUCS season delivers a heavyweight matchup with the #1 and #2 teams from last year facing off. The Knights and Clansmen clashed three times last season, including a playoff showdown that saw the Knights advance to the semi-finals. With Napier coming out on top in all three fixtures, the Clan will be hungry for revenge this weekend.

When asked who the most anticipated matchup is, ENU President Rhys Harrison said “Personally, I’m most looking forward to our opener against Stirling – they’ll be eager to prove themselves, and it should set the tone for the season.”

The Knights took the division by storm last year and the offense this year remains largely intact. A rarity in university football, this gives Napier the advantage of experience and chemistry.

Harrison said “I’d expect big contributions from last year’s rookies who’ve now got that first season under their belt. Gregor Pert (WR) just came off a strong U19 season that went all the way to the national finals. Among our veterans, the offensive line is a real strength – experienced, physical, and ready to set the tone. Behind them, Cameron Dunn (QB) has been busy with Seniors, and Archie Inglis (RB) is coming off a record-breaking season in rushing yards, proving himself a driving force in our offense.”

The Knights’ defence is more of a question-mark however, with many veteran players graduating out. Rookies will need to step up into key positions, and it could prove a trial by fire against a Stirling offense bristling with athletes.

Addressing the defence, Harrison said “Fergus McNiven (LB) adds both physicality and composure, fresh from a senior season, while in the secondary Jonny Nicolson (DB) stands out for his intensity, big hits, and the insight he brings to film and preparation.”

Stirling have a plethora of talent on offense with big frame tight-end Ben Grove proving a nightmare to cover in the redzone. Receivers Jay McPherson and Joshua Johnson-Mitchell bring speed on the outside meaning the defence will have its hands full. Veteran lineman Willy Stevens is an enforcer in the trenches, bringing an additional level of physicality.

The most notable addition to the Stirling offense is rookie quarterback Jonny Taylor. The young passer has just come off a successful season at under-19, resulting in a National Championship appearance and GB call up. However, Taylor may have to wait to get going with his new team as he is still questionable to play with a broken finger.

On defence, Stirling are known to bring a hard-hitting attitude. Linebacker Luca Clements is a run stopping force, whilst safety Ronan Dunn has the ability to cover sideline to sideline.

The game is also a matchup of two veteran Head Coaches with Pete Laird in his 16th season at Napier facing off against Victor Peredo of Stirling. Both are synonymous with their respective programs and will be looking to get their club off to a hot start. The winner of this game could very well go on to win the division, and a head-to-head victory may have big playoff implications down the line.

Coach Laird said “Whilst last year’s performances were an incredible achievement, entitlement is the enemy of success. We have asked the players to push themselves further this year and push themselves to the next level. We are using the word ‘strive’ a lot this year to signify there is still work to be done.”

Stirling will travel down to Edinburgh for an early 11am kick-off at Sighthill Playing Fields.
