One of Ice Hockey’s Greatest Rivalries is coming to Edinburgh

Murrayfield Ice Rink will be host to “one of the most celebrated [rivalries] in global ice hockey history” as former NHL players face-off in just over a months’ time.

The Scotland Ice Hockey Cup will see the USA face Canada over three exhibition games, as well as host fan meet-and-greets, VIP events and youth hockey camps.

Even though the Scottish National League is coming to an end, this is the perfect way to wrap up a historic year for Ice Hockey both in Scotland and in Edinburgh.

This event will be the largest NHL Alumni event ever hosted in the UK.

Lord Provost of Edinburgh, Robert Aldridge, spoke to the organisers and said: “This is shaping up to be the biggest ice hockey series ever staged in the UK.”

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for fans to see true legends of the game compete right here in the capital.”

The cup said: “it’s a rare opportunity to experience the atmosphere typically reserved for North American arenas.”

Youth Camps

As well as the spectacle of the games, the cup is helping to support youth hockey in Scotland.

They said: “NHL Alumni players will host a free youth hockey clinic on Sunday prior to Game 3 of the Cup, giving young athletes a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn directly from former National Hockey League legends.”

“The clinic will focus on skill development, sportsmanship, and sharing the passion of the game.”

The USA and Canada last faced off in the 2026 Olympic final with the USA coming out on top. Fans will be hoping to see aspects of the same rivalry right here on home ice.

Murrayfield is no stranger to hosting international games.

They hosted the Men’s GB team for the first time in 30 years at the start of February in the European Cup of Nations where GB won 2 of their 3 games.

Local Sponsorship

Fans can also get the opportunity to meet some of these Ice Hockey Legends.

Edinburgh based brewery, Cold Town House are sponsoring the event and hosting a meet-and-greet.

On the Friday, fans will get the chance to hear behind-the-scenes stories, ask questions and meet the on-ice icons.

Cold Town House said: “We’re passionate about supporting the venues and organisations that bring world-class sport to the capital, and this clash is set to be a standout moment on the calendar.”

The long-time rivals will face-off on the 22nd of April at Murrayfield Ice Arena with matches also on the 25th and 26th.
