Rangers have sacked Sporting Director Kevin Thelwell and CEO Patrick Stewart after the club suffered their worst start to a season in decades.
The news broke earlier today with Stewart lasting a year in his post and Thelwell just seven months.
After manager Russell Martin also lost his job last month, Thelwell and Stewart were heavily involved in Martin’s hiring garnering backlash from supporters.
In a statement the club said: “Rangers expresses its sincere gratitude to both Patrick and Kevin for their leadership and unwavering commitment to the club.”
Rangers on the park have stabilised over the past month under new head coach Danny Rohl but the issues caused by Martin have heavily stunted their progress both domestically and in Europe.
Stewart was appointed in November 2024 from Manchester United after 18 years on the board there within various roles.
Then Rangers chairman John Gilligan said: “Patrick comes with an excellent reputation and background, bringing extensive experience of operating at senior levels during his 20-plus years in football.”
Stewart has gained criticism for poor transfer activity, the club’s recent accounts which saw a £14 million loss for the financial year and the aforementioned Russell Martin sacking.
Thelwell was announced back in April but didn’t take over until June to finish off his season with Everton.
From signing £8 million striker Youssef Chermiti who had never scored a senior goal, hiring his own son Robbie as head of recruitment without real experience in that role and his insistence that Russell Martin was one of the best coaches he’s ever worked with he seemed to get off on the wrong foot and then never fixed it.
On accepting the job Thelwell said: “This is a huge honour for me to be joining a club with the size, stature and expectations of Rangers. From the first conversations, it was clear to me how ambitious the club is, and I’m excited to play a part in shaping its next chapter.”
After hiring Rohl back in October, Thelwell said: “I don’t think we ever under-rated Scottish football. What I think I did underestimate was the size of this football club.”
Rangers current Chairman Andrew Cavenagh and Vice-Chairman Paraag Marathe are believed to have already started the hiring process and Director Fraser Thornton has been confirmed as interim CEO.
