Science teacher Ryland Grace wakes up on a spaceship with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. The saying “Hail Mary” is a Catholic prayer honouring Mary, mother of Jesus. It acts as a petition for her intercession with God. It is also famously used as a metaphor in sports and general life for a desperate, last-second effort, known as a “Hail Mary pass.” In this movie, “Project Hail Mary” refers to a last-ditch mission to save not only Earth but also Rocky’s home world—immediately setting the tone for a high-stakes, emotionally charged narrative.
So, what makes this film so impactful?
From The Martian to Interstellar, we humans love to imagine worlds beyond our own. This story (also written by Andy Weir, author of The Martian) shares a similar survival-driven structure but distinguishes itself through its emotional depth and focus on connection rather than isolation. Where The Martian is about surviving alone, Project Hail Mary is about surviving together.
One of the main differences is the inclusion of aliens—not as a distant concept, but as a central character. Rocky, a being quite literally shaped like a rock with four legs, becomes the emotional and thematic heart of the story. While his design could easily feel strange or even off-putting, the film handles him with such warmth and personality that he quickly becomes relatable, even lovable.
Unlike the typical portrayal of aliens as hostile or inferior, Rocky is depicted as highly intelligent, emotionally aware, and technologically advanced. This subversion of expectations is one of the film’s greatest strengths. Rather than humans being the dominant explorers, Rocky is the one who initiates contact, immediately shifting the power dynamic and challenging the audience’s assumptions about “the unknown.”
