In a rematch of Super Bowl LVII from just 2 years ago, the back-to-back reigning champion Kansas City Chiefs are staring down a historic feat as they once again face off against the Philadelphia Eagles in the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans tonight.
The Chiefs, led by head coach Andy Reid and superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, are looking to become the first team in National Football League history to win three consecutive Super Bowls. After a closely contested 38-35 victory over the Eagles in Super Bowl LVII, Kansas City returned to the big stage last year and defended their crown after some overtime heroics saw them outlast the San Francisco 49ers, 25-22.
This year, Chiefs fans have been used to the nail-biting nature of their last two triumphs. Eleven of their fifteen wins in the 2024 regular season were won by a single score. Dating back to 2023, they enter New Orleans boasting an NFL-record seventeen consecutive wins in one-score games.
“When you’ve done it over and over again it becomes a habit,” said Mahomes. The Chiefs have proven to be masterful in close-game scenarios.
Mahomes himself is now – in many’s view – embarking on a chase of Tom Brady, widely considered the greatest player in the history of the league. Brady quarterbacked his teams to seven Super Bowls throughout his illustrious career, a standalone record in NFL history. Should Mahomes prevail tonight, he’d move into second on that list with four Super Bowls to his name. At just twenty nine years old, the two-time NFL MVP has still got plenty of time to chase down Brady’s mark.
Across from Mahomes stands Jalen Hurts, the Eagles quarterback seeking to avenge his side’s defeat in 2023. Hurts knows all too well how fine the margins are against Kansas City. His lone turnover in his first Super Bowl appearance led to a Chiefs touchdown that made the difference in the game.
Despite that costly mistake, Hurts was great on the day, posting four total touchdowns and 374 total yards. He’ll need a similarly strong showing if the Eagles are to reverse their fortunes tonight, though this time around he has a new partner in the backfield.
Saquon Barkley has shone in his first year as an Eagle, sitting just thirty yards off the NFL record for single-season rushing yards. The star running back has played a key role in driving Philadelphia back to the biggest stage. His three touchdown runs of over sixty yards in this year’s playoffs is a feat no other player has ever achieved. His ability to break tackles and create big plays will be another key for the Eagles, led by head coach Nick Sirianni.
Despite all the offensive firepower between these two teams, the story of tonight’s game may yet be found on the other side of the ball. Both Kansas City and Philadelphia have had exceptional defensive seasons. The Eagles’ pass coverage, headlined by cornerback Darius Slay and safety CJ Gardner-Johnson with his six interceptions on the year, will be a tough test for Travis Kelce, Xavier Worthy, and the rest of the Chiefs receiver corps. On the defensive line, the Chiefs’ Chris Jones and Eagles’ Jalen Carter are equally capable of wreaking havoc up front. As exemplified by the last Super Bowl between these teams, defensive plays can be the difference on the day.
The Chiefs encountered familiar opposition on their path to New Orleans, beating Josh Allen’s Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship; the fourth time the two have met in the playoffs in the Mahomes era. The Eagles, meanwhile, met rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship, a new playoff foe for Hurts and company.
Philadelphia will want the 2024 playoffs to remain new and different from recent years with tonight’s outcome. The Chiefs, on the other hand, will be looking for a more familiar story as they chase dynasty status. New Orleans – the hosts of more Super Bowls than any other city in the country – looks poised to entertain another classic in the Superdome tonight.
