Danish outfit Nordjsælland snatched a second-half equaliser to draw 1-1 with Heart of Midlothian at Tynecastle Park in the opening mathcday of the UEFA Conference League, cancelling Oisin McEntee’s instinctive finish earlier on. Austin Fenton reports from Gorgie.
Pre-Match
Hearts gaffer Wouter Vrancken made just two changes to the side that ran riot against St Mirren on Saturday. Oisin McEntee replaced Ageu in the centre of the park while Jordi Altena made way for Christian Borchgrevink.
Nordjsælland – playing just their second ever game on Scottish soil – came into the tie on the back of a goalless draw against OB. Jens Olsen responded with three changes as Prince Amoako, Alexander Lind and Juho Lähteenmäki came in for Hjalte Rasmussen, Markus Walker and Villum Berthelsen.
Tynecastle park was understandably noisy, hosting its first European league phase game since late 2024, but the small cohort of travelling Nordjsælland fans made plenty of their own.
First Half
It only took three or so minutes to see how the game would unfold. Nordjsælland swiftly showed their quality on the counter-attack, with wingers Prince Amoako and Ibrahim Adel bursting with plenty of pace on either flank. Much to the relief of the Hearts back four, however, the final ball lacked quality.
The same lack of care for the ball caused Nordjsælland plenty of issues at the other end. A number of cheap giveaways granted Hearts possession high up the park and led to their first shot on target – Malachi Fagan-Walcott latched onto a poor clearance and opened fire from range, only for it to sail straight into the gloves of goalkeeper Andreas Hansen.
Nordjsælland came inches from an opener after twenty-three minutes. After seizing possession up the field, Alexander Lind rolled the ball into the path of Amoako. The Ghanaian shot across goal and rattled the post with Reus beaten.
Both sides enjoyed a number of corners in the first half, and it would be through the set piece by which Hearts found their opening goal.
Calvin Miller’s corner was helped on to Jamie McCart by Laurent Mendy. The defender glanced the ball into the path of an onrushing Oisin McEntee who stabbed beyond Hansen to send Tynecastle into raptures with thirty-three minutes on the clock.
The Irishman nearly grabbed a second from a corner as he squeezed out an effort at the back post – Hansen was able to claw away on this occasion before denying McCart’s follow-up attempt. Their last opportunity came seconds after through Josh McPake, but Hansen was able to make a great diving stop to tip his effort wide of the post.
Second Half
Nordjsælland had truthfully been under the cosh for large spells of the first half and survived a big scare the early stages of the second.
Attempting to mop up a clearance following a Nordjsælland corner, Lähteenmäki whiffed his kick and allowed Josh McPake in behind. With only the goalkeeper to beat the winger dragged his attempt wide, much to the relief of the Finnish wing-back.
Ahead of the final 20 minutes, Jens Olsen made a flurry of substitutions with his side chasing the game. The injection of fresh legs paid off immediately, as Hearts were forced deep into their own half as they fought to preserve their lead.
Wave after wave of pressure could only be absorbed for so long, and after eighty-six minutes Nordjsælland got their say.
Juho Lähteenmäki played a one-two with second half substitute Hjalte Rasmussen before teeing up fellow replacement Nicklas Røjkjær on the edge of the penalty area. The midfielder took a touch to set himself before ripping a right-footed effort which took a wicked deflection off McCart, wrong footing Reus and snatching a point for the Tigers late on.

Post-Match
Jens Olsen was satisfied with his team’s resilience.
“As I see it and feel it right now, it’s a fair result.
“It was a tough start for us, adapting to the game and the picture that Hearts were going to make a strong start with the confidence and strong performances they have made recently. The last five, seven minutes of the first half, we were struggling. We could have been 2-0 down at half time, I must admit that.
“We made some good decisions at half time to help the players and they managed to give the game life. We took a point and I’m happy with that.”
In spite of a strong performance, Hearts will feel hard-done by the manner of which they dropped two points, and Wouter Vrancken certainly reflected that.
“For sure, there’s disappointment that we didn’t take three points when you see the first seventy minutes.
“I’m really happy with the performance. We were dominant on the ball, aggressive… we know how strong Nordjsælland are.
“We know how to defend, and the goal was a deflection so we got unlucky there – but again, I expect a bit more from subs when they come on to give the energy and hold onto the ball as they have done a few times before. It wasn’t like that.
“We fought hard to be able to compete on this stage, and I feel the team showed themselves today. That’s for sure.”
Hearts travel to Glasgow on Sunday to lock horns with reigning champions Celtic before making the journey to east Türkiye to face Trabzonspor. Nordjsælland take on Lyngby in the Superligaen, and return to the Conference League hosting Bulgarian side CSKA Sofia next Thursday.
