St. Mirren midfielder, Killian Phillips revealed he was very close to returning to the League of Ireland prior to moving to Paisley. Speaking in an interview following his side’s 4-1 demolition of Motherwell, Phillips discusses advancing to the League Cup Final.
The Irish midfielder was asked about Stephen Robinson’s management and relationship with his players.
“He’s unbelievable, you know, all due respect to St. Mirren, he’s bringing this club to a whole different level…. How we’ve managed to keep him as well is unbelievable.”
Phillips would then touch on his man-management skills and the impact Robinson had on him specifically.
“I was a bit lost and stuff like that, I was very close to going back home to the League of Ireland… He’s unbelievable and I’ll forever be in debt to him.”
Finally, Phillips was asked about the prospect of the Premier Sports Cup Final, where the buddies will face either Celtic or Rangers. He agreed that neither of their prospective opponents have enjoyed a start to the season in-line with their standards, but insists St. Mirren shouldn’t get too far ahead of themselves.
“It’s a one-off game regardless, it’s so different in the final. So no matter what, they’re Celtic and Rangers, two of the best teams in this country. So regardless, it’s gonna be a hard game. So, you know, we have to focus on league form, we have four or five games in-between in the league, so we’re just gonna focus on that. but look, it’s a one-off game, and we’ll be set up, we’ll be ready to go regardless. ”
The League Cup Final will take place on the 14th of December, where St. Mirren will be joined by Celtic. Undoubtedly, they will enter the final as underdogs, but can take a lot of confidence from Saturday’s performance as the club will look to secure silverware for the first time in 12 years, where they beat Hearts in the 2013 League Cup final.
