What’s On: February 2024

With Winter reigning on and a series of storms sweeping Scotland, it’s tempting to stay inside. But Edinburgh is a city that has long learnt to thrive despite the weather, and this month brings another exciting line up of events that just might tempt you to get out and have some fun! Here are just a few of the things happening in Edinburgh this February.

Jesus Christ Superstar!

Andrew Llyod Webber’s famous rock opera is coming to Edinburgh Playhouse from the 6th to the 10th. Tickets range from £13 up to £79. You don’t want to miss this funky interpretation of the final weeks of Jesus’ life through Judas’ perspective.

Not going to make it? Do not fret! ENRG will be reviewing this event, so keep your eyes peeled.

Manipulate Festival

Are you a lover of the performing arts? Then the Manipulate Festival is for you. Running from the 1st to the 11th of February in Edinburgh, Manipulate showcases and celebrates the fields of animated film, puppetry, and visual theatre. The annual festival hosts a series of performances, workshops, and masterclasses and has been recognised internationally for its originality and blend of different art forms.

Midnight Lunar Market

Midnight Lunar Market is a night market for alternative, witchy, gothic, and unique small businesses and artists. On the 12th and 13th at the Voodoo Rooms, they will be hosting a Valentine’s edition celebrating self-love, platonic love, and sex positivity. At just £1 entry, this is a perfect opportunity to support small businesses. It runs from 5 pm so you could even grab a drink or book yourself in for dinner whilst you’re there!

Do Ho Suh’s “Tracing Time” at the National Galleries Scotland, Modern One

From the 17th of February Modern One will showcase the work of one of the world’s leading contemporary artists, south Korean-born Do Ho Suh. The exhibition includes Suh’s famous ‘hubs’ installation, fabric sculptures that recreate physical spaces, that can be entered and walked through by visitors.

It also showcases Suh’s innovative techniques and use of material through thread drawings, sculptures and printmaking (among others) with a special focus on his work with paper, examining ideas and thoughts concerning the concepts of ‘home’ and ‘identity’.

This exhibition will also show a selection of Suh’s sketchbooks publicly for the first time.

The Wizard of Oz

One of my absolute favourite childhood movies, and an undeniable classic is coming to the stage in Edinburgh. The Wizard of Oz will be performed at the Edinburgh Playhouse for one week from the 13th to the 17th. Tickets are still available and start from just £13.00! So be sure to grab yours soon.

Valentine’s Day

There are a bunch of different ways to celebrate the 14th of February this year in Edinburgh. You could go to a candlelit music concert at St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral, enjoy an evening of romantic opera at the Institut Françis d’Écosse, dive into an exclusive menu accompanied by live music at The Botanist, or watch the Blues and Burlesque live cabaret at the Voodoo Rooms. So much romantic goodness to choose from!

Usher Hall is also hosting a Valentine’s Romeo and Juliet concert with music performed by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra on the 16th of February.

Candlelight Concerts

Candlelight Concerts are a recurring phenomenon in Edinburgh and their February line-up looks particularly exciting.  As well as their Valentine’s Day special, Candlelight Concerts will also be hosting: A Tribute to Pink Floyd (7th) and A Tribute to Taylor Swift (17th) at Ghillie Dhu as well as A Tribute to Queen (14th) and A Tribute to Fleetwood Mac (28th) at St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral.

There’s bound to be at least one musical tribute for you!

Party Like Gatsby!

The Edinburgh 02 Academy is catapulting you back to the 1920s for one night and one night only. Their Gatsby-themed extravaganza is the perfect opportunity to dress up and dance the night away. With three hours’ worth of circus performances, dancers, and live music, this is bound to be a night to remember. Escape to 1922 and experience a glamorous night like no other on the 23rd of February.

Come back next month to see what’s on in Edinburgh in March!
